Forum editorial: Good place to get old wins rosesPRAIRIE ROSES: To Fargo and other cities for making the top 20 in the Milken Institute’s list of the best small cities for “successful aging.” Fargo ranked 18th. Among nearby cities, Sioux Falls, S.D., was first and Bismarck was third. The good rankings might come as a surprise because of the region’s winter weather, which can be tough on older people. But the institute’s criteria focused on the strength of the economy, ease of getting around, short commutes, funding for senior services and easy access to grocery stores, among other amenities. Fargo and the other cities did well in those categories. That’s good news. While Cass County is among the youngest counties in the region, the county’s senior population is large and growing. Nice to know that the maturing segment of the population can live well here.
LEAFY SPURGE: To the people (some would say cowards) who were in the boat that was involved in hit-and-run collision with another boat July 4 on Minnesota’s Big Cormorant Lake: One man on the boat that was struck was seriously injured. The offending boat, believed to be at least 17 feet long, fiberglass and equipped with a swimmer’s platform on the stern, sped from the scene of the accident, despite pleas for help from the people in the other craft. Authorities are trying to piece together evidence regarding the boat that sped away but need help from the public. Better yet, the occupants of the rogue boat should come forward and admit their involvement.
