Fergus Fall drops 2 games

VICTORIA, Minn. – Fergus Falls Post 30 gave up two three-run leads in an opening-round 5-4 loss to Winona at the Minnesota Division II American Legion state baseball tournament on Friday.

Winona pushed the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Pete Gaustad was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Post 30.

Fergus Falls was playing on short rest after playing a decisive District 9 championship game against the Moorhead Blues on Monday.

Post 30 head coach Nick Lewis said the challenging District 9 tournament had some lingering effects at the state tournament.

“It took a toll on our pitching staff,” Lewis said. “Our pitcher threw a lot of innings in the district tournament.”

Nick Heck was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Post 30 in the opening game. Walker Heinen was 2-for-5.

“We had two three run leads in the first game,” Lewis said. “That loss kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

Post 30 followed with a 17-2 loss to Eden Prairie. The two losses eliminate Fergus Falls from the tournament.
