Ward County commissioners consider sales tax

MINOT, N.D. — The Ward County Commission may ask voters to approve a one-half percent sales tax for county building projects.

The proposed tax would take effect in November and last for no more than 10 years. It would finance construction of a county office building, an expansion of the county jail and a renovation of the Ward County courthouse.

Some sales tax money would also be used to pay for repairs to public works that were damaged during last year's Souris River flooding.

The Minot Daily News reports the commissioners plan to decide Aug. 21 whether they'll put the sales tax on the November ballot. The commission approved an initial draft of the proposal on Tuesday.

Cass, Steele, Walsh and Williams counties already levy a local sales tax.
