Benshoof: Making a winning first impression at speed dating
When it comes to first impressions, you can probably do better than that.
First impressions matter, after all, whether it’s a work-related meting or the first meeting with your in-laws.
And first impressions matter even more when you only have six minutes to work with, as will be the case at a speed dating event in Moorhead on Saturday night.
The event works like this: Everyone spends six minutes talking with each potential suitor, and at the end writes down the person they’d like to see again. If their pick chooses them as well, Moria Shannon, organizer of the event, alerts them that they’ve matched.
Shannon says she wanted to organize speed dating here because it can be so difficult to meet other singles, no matter the age.
“I just got tired of there not being any place in Fargo for singles to meet each other, except for the bar scene or church,” she says.
This is the second such event Shannon has organized. At the first, held earlier this month, nine men showed up compared to three women (good odds, ladies), with ages ranging from 20s to 40s.
After participating in that speed dating, Shannon, who is single, says six minutes is more than enough time to know whether you want to see someone again.
But when your potential date is meeting a number of different people during the evening, how do you ensure that you stand out?
“For me, the ones that impressed me the most were the ones that immediately made me feel comfortable, and could make me laugh,” Shannon says. “They seemed like they were open to discussing themselves with me.”
And what about starting the interaction with some funny or witty one-liner, like my winner about the genus aotus (aotus ericoides is an acceptable answer, by the way).
“Not the cheesy lines,” she said with a laugh. “They kind of bombed on me.”
