Central Cass' Breske verbally commits to NDSU women's basketball

FARGO – Hannah Breske won’t have to go very far to play college basketball. The incoming senior at Central Cass High School gave North Dakota State a verbal commitment on Friday to complete a lifelong quest.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being a Bison,” she said. “It was always a goal. Work hard and do the best I can to try and be a Bison. It was a dream come true.”

The 5-foot-11 guard/forward averaged 15.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists for the Squirrels last season. NDSU first contacted her last summer, and the pace picked up in the last several months.

“Just her size and her length,” said Central Cass head coach Ryan Mears. “She’s a versatile player who can handle the ball and play an off-guard or wing position.”

Minnesota State Moorhead and the University of Mary (N.D.) were her other two college finalists, with Nebraska-Kearney also showing interest. She is the first Bison verbal commitment for the 2013 freshman class and can make it official during the early signing period in November.

Breske eclipsed 1,000 career points during the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 tournament, where the Squirrels reached the championship game. She also helped Central Cass to a North Dakota Class B state volleyball championship last fall.

She was a second-team Class B all-state basketball selection last year. Mears said her basketball stock took a hike in offseason AAU tournaments.

“I started getting a lot of coaches emailing me with interest,” he said.

Concentrating on one sport will be different for her, she admitted. She also played on Central Cass’ standout softball team.

“Yeah, that will be a challenge,” she said. “I like different sports at different times. I’m up for challenges in life.”
