Let’s have truth about the church

Marlene Boyer wrote a letter to The Forum (July 2) stating four facts about the Catholic Church that are so thin they can be falsified with four more:

Fact: The Bible does not dictate the “rules” (doctrines) of the Catholic Church – it is merely a book to their inspiration. If the Catholic Church were to follow every word of the Bible, Catholics worldwide would willingly murder their children for cursing (Leviticus 20:9 NLT), kill non-Christians without hesitation (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB), or purchase and sell slaves at their own convenience (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT.)

Truth is that all religious organizations, willingly or not, conform to the culture and era they live in. There was a time when the Catholic Church would perform all the horrible things above, but that changed with culture and secular criticism. Surely we can agree that’s a good thing.

Fact: “Working against nature” is not dangerous – we do it every day in medicine, agriculture and even simple yard maintenance. I assume Boyer was making a vague reference to homosexuality. Well, there’s nothing dangerous about that either. They are just as healthy as any heterosexual.

Fact: As a public school teacher in a secular country, you have to keep your religion to yourself. And frankly, that isn’t much to ask. You’d expect the same from any Muslim, Jew or Buddhist.

Fact: St. Joseph’s had every right to fire Trish Cameron, but I hope it serves as a wake-up call to all Catholics in the area. It is a church of intolerance, hatred and discrimination. It’s time to leave this Dark Age religion. You can keep your faith in God without having to accept these vices – you just can’t be Catholic, and that’s quite all right. Even with God.
