Former Fargo hockey standout in satisfactory condition after boating accident

FARGO – A former Fargo North goaltender who was injured in a boating accident on the Fourth of July remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition.

Nick Schmit was hurt while swimming in West McDonald Lake near Dent, Minn., when a passing boat went over him, striking him with its propeller.

The boat’s occupants rescued Schmit, 18, and took him to a local hospital.

He was later transferred to Sanford Health for surgery. A hospital spokeswoman said this morning the family agreed to release a condition report. Schmit's condition hadn't previously been disclosed publicly.

Schmit, who graduated from Fargo North, was a member of the school’s 2011-12 state hockey championship team.
