Green thumb on display

Fargo - Elaine Fick’s garden started out small, something to fill her otherwise bare yard. But the small project turned grand, not necessarily in size but certainly in beauty, which caught the attention of the Soroptimist International of Fargo.

Fick’s green thumb is one of 15 gardens that will be featured in this year’s Soroptimist International of Fargo annual garden tour Wednesday and Thursday.

“Each year, we try to get a variety of yards to show,” Soroptimist member Rachel McAllen said. “We have this year, yards that show water features, Koi fish, organic type yard, xeriscaping, butterfly yard, etc. We try to have a nice variety.”

Fick’s love of gardening started when she bought her north Fargo twinhome in 1998.

“I had the front part professionally landscaped,” she said. “When I moved in, I didn’t have any trees or anything. It was just blank.”

The tour will highlight what are now many plantings on Fick’s property.

She started with a peanut-shaped garden, followed by a weeping willow tree she planted, and the colorful creations began to blossom from there.

A garden of hostas was added, along with a lattice that is now filled with flowers.

“Elaine’s is a commercial-landscaped yard but really is gorgeous as she is truly a gardener and loves what she does,” McAllen said. “She has made it what it is. She just had some help getting the different areas started.”

A bit of a late bloomer, Fick said she got into gardening about the time she retired.

“It was just a little at a time,” she said. “My mother and sister had helped me in the beginning by giving me some perennials. At that time, I had an all-sun garden. Now it’s getting to be more shaded with the trees growing.”

Fick said she is excited to be a part of this year’s garden tour, an event she’s attended many times in the past.

Just as an interior decorator loves to switch things up inside homes, Fick said she likes to switch up her outside décor.
