Trent Olson captures The Forum All-City golf tournament title

MOORHEAD – Trent Olson had a tough day at the Forum All-City Golf Tournament on Sunday.

He battled the heat and took on 2010 champion Nate Anderson in the semifinals before he fended off Dan Matheson in the championship match with a 2-up victory to seal the title at The Meadows Golf Course.

“It feels great,” Olson said. “Both my first and second matches were exactly the same. I wasn’t playing too bad down the stretch, so I told myself to keep hitting good shots and whatever happens, happens.”

In the championship match against Matheson, it was tied going into the 4th hole. Matheson’s chip shot landed over the green causing him to make bogey, while Olson made his par putt to take the 1-up lead.

Olson landed his tee shot on hole five – a 205-yard par 3 – just six feet from the pin and sank the birdie putt to go up two.

Matheson took one back on the 8th hole – another short par 3 – landing his tee shot on the green and two-putting for par. Olson clubbed down on his tee shot and it landed just short of the green. He chipped on and missed the par putt to fall to 1-up after the front nine.

On the 15th hole – a 454-yard par 3 – Matheson’s 170-yard approach shot fell 20 feet from the pin. He missed the twenty-footer by inches but was able to make the par putt as Olson bogeyed the hole.

Matheson birdied sixteen to reduce Olson’s lead to

On the 18th hole, Olson hit a stunning chip shot that landed two feet from the pin, leaving him with a short birdie putt. Matheson’s second shot landed in the sand trap. After he punched out, he was left with a long putt for par. But it wouldn’t matter as Olson sank the short birdie putt to become the new All-City champion.

Olson found himself in a similar situation on Sunday morning in the semifinal match against Nate Anderson, but was able to hold off with a 2-up win and advance to the championship match.

“I was 3-up in both my matches (Sunday) going into the last four holes,” Olson said. “I bogeyed No. 15 and my opponents both birdied No. 16. Dan’s a great player, and so was Nathan this morning. It was nice to get back at (Nathan) after the KX, I’ve got bragging rights for the rest of the summer.”

Matheson advanced to the championship match over Bryant Buckellew on Sunday morning in the semifinal match with a 1-up win.

“I just didn’t make putts when I needed to … they were close, burning edges,” Matheson said. “Trent played great today. I give all credit to him.”
