Anderson secures berth in Forum All-City semifinals

MOORHEAD – As Nathan Anderson heard the splash of his opponent’s shot, he realized that a berth in Sunday’s semifinals was in hand.

Hunter Thorsen’s approach shot into a water hazard on the 14th hole helped Anderson defeat Thorsen 6 and 4 in the quarterfinals of the tournament Saturday at The Meadows Golf Course.

Anderson’s afternoon went smoother than his morning. In his second-round match Saturday morning, Anderson found himself four down after eight holes. He rebounded to squeeze by with a 1-up win over Connor Holland to set up the match against Thorsen.

“The afternoon round I played better than the morning round,” said Anderson, who won the All-City title in 2010. “I was able to win quite a few holes and get it done in a more relaxed fashion. I just ground and wiggled out of it.”

Anderson was 4-up heading into the 13th hole and landed his approach just shy of the pin. He tapped it in to stretch the lead to 5-up and put the pressure on Thorsen.

On the 14th, Thorsen’s approach shot landed in a nearby water hazard, leaving him no choice but to concede the win to Anderson.

Trent Olson knocked off the defending champion, winning five straight holes to defeat Nick Olsgaard 5 and 4 after playing just 14 holes.

When Olsgaard sank the par putt on the ninth hole to tie the match after trailing by four holes early, Olson decided to go back to the basics.

“I played Nick Olsgaard before and he’s always tough,” Olson said. “I played him when I was a little younger and he gave me a whooping, but today I just told myself to go out and hit the fairways and greens and go back to the fundamentals – turn bogeys into pars and pars into birdies.”

Olson battled Riley Johnson in the second round on Saturday morning to a 3 and 1 victory and will face Anderson today in the semifinals.

“He already beat me earlier this year at the KX (Amateur) in six extra holes, so I’m looking forward to getting back at him.” Olson said.

Also vying for the title are Bryant Buckellew and Don Matheson.

Matheson started off with a bogey on the first hole and made three birdies on the back nine to play to a 1-up victory over Zach Kappes. Matheson took out Coy Papachek 1-up after 20 holes in the morning round and qualified for the championship flight with a 74.

Buckellew needed only one extra hole to take care of Pat Thomas with a 1-up win. He fended off Mason Kennedy 7 and 5 in the second round while Thomas took course-record holder Pat Deitz to extra holes before taking the match 1 up.

The championship group tees off at 8:50 a.m. Sunday morning at The Meadows.
