Shanley's Jacobson commits to Bison men's basketball team
The Fargo Shanley guard has verbally committed to play men’s basketball for North Dakota State, he said Tuesday.
“I’ve always wanted to be a Bison and it’s home,” said Jacobson, who also considered Cal Poly and Drake.
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Jacobson will be entering his senior year of high school and is set to join NDSU in 2013. He averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds per game in his junior season at Shanley.
Jacobson helped his team to the North Dakota Class A state championship game last March. Jacobson said he could redshirt his first year at NDSU, but added that isn’t for certain.
“I think most of that is yet to be determined,” said Jacobson. “I think I would probably need to redshirt to put on some weight.”
Jacobson is the son of former NDSU women’s basketball great Pat (Smykowski) Jacobson. A.J. said Pat’s ties to NDSU played a small role in his decision.
“It was always my decision to make,” he said. “Knowing she was a Bison, and her experience went really well, helped me be sure with myself.”
Jacobson said he expects to play shooting guard or small forward for NDSU. He chose to make the decision now so that it didn’t drag into his season year of high school.
“I just knew,” said A.J., who also plays soccer for the Deacons. “I was for sure right now that (NDSU) is where I wanted to be. I didn’t want to lead any other schools on and I didn’t really want to worry about it. … It feels really right.”
