Bismarck Civic Center expansion might go to voters

BISMARCK, N.D. — The Bismarck City Commission has asked staff to draft a ballot measure and financing options for a multimillion-dollar expansion of the Civic Center.

A group of business owners wants to put the measure on the November ballot. The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/MANjTK ) reports that expanding the capital city's main arena could cost as much as $60 million.

Businessman Bill Shalhoob says the project could be paid for with a visitors’ tax on hotel rooms, food and liquor. He says revenue also could be raised through sponsorships and naming rights.

Mayor John Warford says the idea has been studied for years and he thinks it's time to put it before residents for a decision.
