VIDEO: NDSU updates artifical turf at Fargodome

FARGO – A process that started a few years ago when it became evident that the artificial turf at the Fargodome was quickly becoming outdated is seeing its final touches.

The $3 million AstroTurf GameDay 3-D system began to show reality on Monday when the cushy green carpet was being glued to its underlying surface.

The turf is being attached in five-yard increments spanning from sideline to sideline with the exception of logos that were put together at Astroturf’s manufacturing plant in Dalton, Ga. The rubber infill will be added later.

The logos, including a large Bison at midfield, and the yellow end zones are the same thread as the green turf. In other words, they will not fade, which saves on maintenance costs.

The project is expected to be completed by July 11, said Mitchell Truban, project engineer for AstroTurf.

The roll-up system is only the second of its kind for AstroTurf. The other is in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. The turf will be able to be rolled up and stored in a giant pit near the south end zone.

“This is a unique system,” Truban said.
