Runaway father reunited briefly with son

MINNEAPOLIS — The Lakeville father who abandoned his young son and traveled to California has been allowed to speak with the boy for the first time in about a year.

Steven Cross and 12-year-old Sebastian got together at a therapist's office Thursday. Cross tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune he was able to apologize to his son for leaving.

Cross left Minnesota last July when his house was in foreclosure. Cross said he left to find work. He wrote a letter instructing his son to go to a neighbor's house and another letter asking the neighbors to become his son's guardian. Sebastian later moved in with a great-aunt and has since been reunited with his mother, who he thought was dead.

Cross was convicted earlier this year of misdemeanor child neglect.
