Weather Talk: No severe thunderstorm, tornado warnings for F-MMany inquiries have come into the WDAY weather center from Fargo-Moorhead-area residents wondering why their CodeRED telephone warning system has not been working this year.
There is nothing wrong with the system – there have been no severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings issued for the Fargo-Moorhead area yet this year. Compared to last summer, this has been a very inactive severe storm season across all of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
It seems whenever the upper-level winds have been strong enough to support severe weather, the surface conditions have been too cool or too dry. And whenever the surface air has become warm and moist, the upper air currents have usually been relatively weak at that time.
Weather forecasters and storm spotters will need to remain vigilant because weather in these parts has been known to change quickly.
