DeJong's home run helps lead D-G-F past Barnesville
Barnesville’s starting pitcher Dylan Mahrer gave D-G-F some trouble right away, retiring six straight batters in the first two innings. Meanwhile, Graham Souve tallied a one-run single that allowed third baseman Ben Souve to score on a D-G-F error to give Barnesville an early 2-0 after two innings.
Mahrer struck out 12 on the night and Ben Souve and Graham Souve each drove in one run for Barnesville.
Kyle Johnson broke the silence in the bottom of the third inning with a ground rule double that gave D-G-F its first hit. Isaiah Greene knocked a base clearing double followed by DeJong’s two-run home run - his first of the season - to put D-G-F up 7-3 after five innings.
Both Greene and DeJong tallied two hits, earned three RBI and scored two runs.
“It felt pretty good to get the first one out of the way,” DeJong said. “It took us until the fourth inning to get started, but we did pretty good then.”
D-G-F’s starting pitcher Zach Nelson retired nine of the last 12 batters for Barnesville. Nelson recorded eight strike outs during the win.
“The at bats weren’t’ really impressive early on,” D-G-F’s head coach Al Kruger said. “But we hung in there and got better at bats. The thing that we need to be good at for us to be a good team this year is the ability to make all the routine plays in the infield.”
