Redistricting causes voter confusion in south Fargo precinct

FARGO - The redrawing of legislative District 46 last session is causing some confusion for voters in Fargo's Precinct 46-01, who are casting ballots at the Vista Inn at the corner of Interstate 94 and South University Drive.

West of University Drive, lawmakers moved the precinct's northern boundary from I-94 to 25th Avenue South. That forces voters in the affected area to drive across I-94 to Olivet Lutheran Church at 13th Avenue South and University Drive to vote in Precinct 11-01.

One upset voter complained to election inspector Diane Briggs that he lived "within crawling distance" of the Vista Inn -- which, with the redistricting, no longer sits in 46-01, though it's still being used as the precinct's polling site.

"I hope you'll still vote," Briggs told the man after informing him he would have to drive to Olivet.

"Yeah, we'll see," the man grumbled as he walked out.

Briggs said there also has been "a tremendous amount" of spoiled ballots because voters are mistakenly crossing party lines on the primary races.

Turnout has been steady all day, with 289 ballots tallied by 12:30 p.m.
