Weekend Watch: ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star party at Sickies

FARGO – While tonight marks the second Cruisin’ Broadway of the year, The Hub in south Fargo has its engines revving for the weekend.

The entertainment complex opens Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews, this weekend with a handful of events that will have gear heads squealing with delight.

The restaurant/bar opens with a bang Friday night. Lee Rocker, bassist from the Stray Cats brings his own brand of rockabilly to the adjoining Venue for an ID-only show starting at 10 p.m. The night opens with a classic car show from 5 to 9 in the parking lot. Inside, Jack Knife and the Sharps rip up the rock ’n’ roll at 8, followed by Fargo’s own Bad Weather Burlesque at 9.

The real attraction (and sex appeal) rolls in on Saturday when Charlie Hunnam, better known as Jax from the TV hit “Sons of Anarchy,” joins the party. He signs autographs from 7 to 9, then sticks around for a leather & lace party at 9:30.

While a TV show largely about the male members of a murderous, gun-running, southern California motorcycle gang would seem to be pretty macho territory, the FX series has developed a substantial female

fan base.

How?

Hunnam.

With a boyish face (you may remember him as the English roommate in Judd Apatow’s FOX comedy “Undeclared”) and laid-back attitude, the British actor’s looks play to Jax’s conflicted view of his gang, the Sons of Anarchy.

He is both a child of the organization (his father formed it) and rises to be its leader, all the while disagreeing with his partners-in-crime and frequently distancing himself from their decisions, which fly against his father’s chartering ideas.

He is an outsider in his own family, the most likable bad boy and the ultimate lady’s man.

Hardly a model citizen himself, he leaves his drug-addled wife because she couldn’t keep clean, even when she was pregnant with his child. When the boy is born addicted to crank and with a heart defect, the proud papa beats up his wife’s dealer, while his high school sweetheart takes care of the recovering mother and child.

And speaking of mothers, Jax has issues with his as he believes she and his stepfather, now the club’s leader, conspired to kill Jax’s dad.

“Sons of Anarchy” is as close as most men will get to watching a soap opera. It’s like “Hamlet” on two wheels.

Like the prince, he’s torn between wanting to do good and his evil urges.

Jax beats up a man for disrespecting his girlfriend, then sleeps with her, although he has that doctor girlfriend. And when the doctor girlfriend’s ex, an ATF agent out to get the gang, stalks and eventually assaults the girlfriend, Jax kills him.

But when the rest of his crew want to take out an eye-witness to one of their murders, Jax shows mercy, pulls a gun on his own biker brothers to save the young woman and pays for her to leave town.

He’s kind of like a knight in shining armor – except his is made of black leather.
