Intoxicated man briefly shuts down I-29 in Grand Forks

GRAND FORKS - Traffic on Interstate 29 in Grand Forks was halted for a short time about 6 p.m. Tuesday as Grand Forks Police and the state Highway Patrol responded to reports of a suicidal man with a knife on the 32nd Avenue overpass.

Police Sgt. Jason Dvorak said they found the man on top of the embankment, underneath the deck of the overpass. He was unarmed and intoxicated and agreed to go into police custody after speaking with officers. He was taken by ambulance to Altru Hospital for an evaluation, Dvorak said.

Authorities shut down traffic the northbound and southbound lanes for 10 to 15 minutes as precaution while they were talking to the man.
