Freeman short in Open qualifier; Hoge still in itBen Freeman gave qualifying for the U.S. Open a run Monday in the sectional near Chicago, but fell short. Meanwhile, another Fargo golfer, Tom Hoge, has an outside shot at a qualifier in Houston.
Hoge shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 18th place in the tourney in Houston, which plays its final round today. The top three in each sectional qualify for the U.S. Open June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Hoge had three birdies, but a double bogey five on the par-3 fourth hurt. Bob Estes leads with a 65 while four golfers are tied for second with a 68.
Freeman had three birdies and a bogey and was just two shots from third place in his morning round. But he shot a 1-over par for the day to finish tied for 15th place.
