NDSU NEWS: Sarah Russell, daughter of Ken and Katie Russell, Fargo, has been admitted to North Dakota State University “with distinction.” Distinction means that NDSU is acknowledging Russell as an honor student.
MSUM NEWS: The Minnesota State University Moorhead mathematics department has awarded Christopher Mehl, son of Paul and Mary Ann Mehl, Fargo, the Bill Ritchie Award for Excellence in Mathematics. Faculty selects a winner based on grade point average, performance in difficult mathematics courses and the results of the ETS Major Field Test in Mathematics.
UND NEWS: The University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, has awarded Honor Program partial tuition waivers to Fargo students Austin Espe, son of William and Sharon Espe, and Brent Johnson, son of Keith and Carol Johnson. The Honors Program nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and scholarship beyond the usual academic frameworks. Incoming students who receive the tuition waiver must enroll in at least one Honors class and participate in Honors service projects each semester.

AWARDS AND OTHER RECOGNITIONS: Moorhead High School student Drew Lausch was recently honored for theater arts study at the Scholars of Distinction awards program. Scholars of Distinction specialties are developed through partnerships that include educators, business people and others who are able to apply complex knowledge and skills to the real world. To earn distinction, a student must complete required work in Minnesota’s Academic Standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter, and apply their knowledge and skills on challenging projects.

Cargill has awarded a $3,000 academic achievement scholarship to Jocelyn Kyllo of Blanchard, N.D. Kyllo is one of 40 children of Cargill employees to earn a scholarship.
Lichtsinn-Anderson Insurance of Moorhead and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company have awarded Rachel Rude, daughter of Nathan and Dawn Rude, Moorhead, a $1,000 Road to Success Scholarship. Rude was selected based on academic achievement and her safe driving record.
Local 1426 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has awarded $500 IBEW Memorial Scholarships to Melissa Halvorson, daughter of David and Diane Halvorson, Fargo, and Brooke Dyrdahl, daughter of Daniel and Roberta Dyrdahl, Gully, Minn.

Absolute Marketing has awarded business marketing majors Alex Hauger and Kristen Oldyn summer internships. Hauger is a junior at Concordia College and will assist with client relations. Oldyn is a senior at North Dakota State University and will work in media buying.
HIGH HONORS: Jay Turner, 14-year-old senior at Twin Oaks School in Ashby, Minn., and recent graduate of Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Fergus Falls, recently won the Dakotas Manitoba Minnesota Optimist essay contest. This year’s theme was “How my positive outlook benefits my community.” Turner was sponsored by the Optimist Club of Fargo Southwest and was awarded a $2,500 scholarship for the honor. Turner plans to study math, physics, biochemistry and chemistry at the University of Minnesota, Morris, in the fall.
