Wagner: Plenty of notable races on this summer's calendar

Bemidji, Minn.

With the unofficial start of summer here with the Memorial Day holiday, it gives us runners plenty to get excited about.

Summer brings on the opportunity to do a lot more outside, but it also is marked by races – big and small, close and far – nearly every weekend. And that means a chance to get outside early on Saturday mornings and enjoy what we love with dozens, hundreds or even thousands of others.

This year, there are several notable races on the calendar.

Below there are several races listed to help runners organize their calendar and plan. To find out even more details, visit my blog, Addicted to Running, and click on the “Toe the line” link along the top. It will direct you to a long list of races, and clicking on each race will take you to the registration information for the event.

Here are some events worth considering this summer:

- The Buffalo River Trail Run is back for its second year at the state park east of Glyndon, Minn. Those who have run at Buffalo River State Park know it’s a fun place to get out and move. Just sign up, and arrive early this Saturday, to enjoy the experience.

- Another trail run debuts three weeks later. Maplewood State Park will serve as home to the Running Wild 7K Trail Run on July 23. The trail system at Maplewood is terrific, and if you want to do some exploring while getting in some extra miles, bringing some extra fluids and strike out after the race.

- If you’re more inclined to stay on the roads, there are a few dozen options. The Lindenwood 10K is set June 9 in Fargo, the Nordic Footprints 5K will be June 23 in Moorhead and YMCA Chase Race is June 26 in Fargo.

- Two terrific options for the Fourth of July are set in Park Rapids, Minn., and Walker, Minn. Both cities do a terrific job putting on a holiday celebration, and a race is a great way to commemorate our country’s birthday.

On another note, those who are familiar with the Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash events might be interested in the Sept. 15 event near Fergus Falls, Minn. Click on my blog’s link for The Viking Challenge to find out more details.
