Police say North Dakota woman scammed in Internet fraud

GRAND FORKS – Grand Forks police say a North Dakota woman defrauded in an Internet romance scam has lost $70,000.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that a 72-year-old woman from Grafton initially sent $20,000 to a person with whom she had developed an online relationship to help him come to the United States.

He later asked for $50,000 to help his sick mother in Nigeria.

The woman’s bank tried unsuccessfully to stop the $50,000 transaction before it went through.
