Hankinson-Fairmount senior battles wind, field for ND Class B boys state track title

BISMARCK _ There’s more than one way to running the 800 meters, and Hankinson-Fairmount senior Dalton Herding isn’t averse to changing methods on the fly.

Herding used his mind and his legs to beat the wind and the competition to win the 800 meters Saturday at the North Dakota Class B state track and field meet.

Herding turned in a time of 1 minute, 59.40 seconds to win by a second over runner-up Gabe Brien of Northern Lights, who turned in a 2:00.74.

Herding said he had to alter his plans based on the blustery wind and competition.

“I was planning on following someone else, but I had to change ideas because some younger guys ran the race pretty hard right away, so I decided to stay behind them,” Herding said. “I decided just to take it with 250 meters left.”

Herding brought the fastest time into the state meet, a full two seconds faster than his winning time. It was second second-best time of the season.

“It was pretty good actually. I’m pretty happy with it,” Herding added. “(The wind) wore down the guys in front, those who weren’t following somebody. That happened to me last year.”

The wind didn’t have as much of an effect on field events like the long jump. Carrington’s Scott Burnham set a school record and a personal record with a leap of 22 feet, 7 inches to win that event.

Burnham waited until the finals before warming up on a day when temperatures struggled to get out of the 40s.

“It’s nice when it’s about 75 degrees and the muscles don’t get as tight,” Burnham said.

Burnham hit his winning jump on his penultimate attempt in the finals. His previous best had been 22-0½. Early, he set a PR in the high jump with a 6-3.

Kindred’s Jack Plankers added a discus championship to go with the shot put. He tossed 149-6 on Saturday.

Kindred’s 1,600 relay team of Scott Cramer, Brandon Quibel, Race Heitkamp and Eric Bachmeier coasted to a winning time of 3:31.83. Killdeer was second at 3:35.02.

Lisbon was steady throughout the meet, taking the team title with 80 points. The Broncos were followed by Rugby with 67, Kindred with 55. Killdeer had 41 and Bowman County rounded out the top five with 36 points.
