Spirit Lake tribal member sentenced for embezzlementA former Spirit Lake tribal member must pay back $22,350 he embezzled from a tribal program with the help of his wife and daughter, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
William Kazena, 68, was also sentenced to four years probation Friday in U.S. District Court in Fargo on the charge of conspiracy to embezzle from an Indian tribal organization.
Kazena, who pleaded guilty on Jan. 11, took benefits from the Spirit Lake Vocational Rehabilitation Program he wasn’t qualified to receive.
His wife, Martina Kazena, who was the director of the program, pleaded guilty to her role in the conspiracy on Jan. 11 and will be sentenced on July 23.
His daughter, Tanya Jetty, who was the program’s compliance officer, pleaded guilty on May 8 and will be sentenced Aug. 27.
Kazena must pay restitution to the U.S. Department of Education.
