Driver killed in head-on crash was 87-year-old Winona manWINONA, Minn. – An 87-year-old man is dead after a head-on collision on Highway 61 milepost 16 around 12:23 Friday afternoon.
Roger D. Papenfuss of Winona, Minn., was driving northbound in a 2005 Toyota Prius on Highway 61 when his vehicle collided with a semi-truck driven by Robert J. Siebenaler of Lewiston, Minn.
According to The Winona Daily News, a wrong-way driver collided with the semi-trailer.
Both vehicles caught on fire. The semi burned to its frame.
The highway was closed for nearly 20 miles in both directions as fire and rescue crews fought the fire for over an hour. According to reports, thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.
Siebenaler got out of his truck before it caught fire. He was reported as having no apparent injuries but was transported to a Rochester hospital.
