Fire officials worried Ely wildfire could flare up again

ELY, Minn. — Fire officials are concerned that a wildfire could flare up again outside the popular tourist town of Ely in northeastern Minnesota.

Friday's forecast is for hot, dry and windy weather. Jean Bergerson of the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center in Grand Rapids tells WDIO-TV (http://bit.ly/L5iGEe) homes in Ely are not completely safe yet, because the winds have shifted toward them.

Officials are concerned spot fires might have started that they haven't seen yet, and say a lot of work remains to be done.

The fire has blackened 216 acres and burned three buildings — a shop, a storage building and a hunting shack. Seven homes remain under an evacuation order along Minnesota Highway 1. Residents are being escorted to their homes to pick up pets or medication, if necessary.
