Red River wins team title, extend dual winning streak to 146 matches

GRAND FORKS – Upsets dotted the East Region girls tennis tournament Thursday afternoon.

But the biggest favorite of all avoided joining that group.

Grand Forks Red River won its 12th consecutive East Region team championship, cruising past Grand Forks Central, Fargo Davies and West Fargo at Center Court Fitness Club.

The Roughriders beat Central and Davies 5-0 before topping the Packers 4-1 in the championship.

“We played extremely well,” Red River coach Greg LaDouceur said. “The girls were really excited for the first match in the morning and that carried through the rest of the day. I was very pleased with their effort.”

Red River didn’t come close to losing on a day where a few teams had surprising upsets.

In a state-qualifying match, No. 6 Fargo South upended No. 4 Fargo Davies. The Bruins lost to the Eagles 5-4 earlier in the season but dominated at singles after the Eagles surprisingly threw a couple of their best players in doubles.

Red River made sure that things didn’t get interesting, though. The Roughriders extended their dual winning streak to 146 – a stretch that spans just over a decade.

Undefeated Red River tweaked its lineup throughout the day.

Sammy Anderson, the two-time defending state singles champion, played doubles during the team’s 5-0 win over the Knights. Anderson then settled back into singles for the final two duals.

“Teams are going to try to find weaknesses in our lineup,” LaDouceur said. “I don’t see any.”

Red River’s only loss came at No. 2 doubles, where West Fargo’s Mariah Stein and Katie Baasch beat the Roughrider team of Alexis Caoili and Paige Relling in three sets.

“Any time you play in the tournament, you can be upset,” LaDouceur said. “We showed up and played very well. I’m glad we weren’t one of the teams that got upset.”

The individual tournament begins today. The finals will be Saturday afternoon.
