ND man sentenced to 7 years for drug conspiracy

FARGO — A North Dakota man who says his involvement in a drug conspiracy was the result of post-traumatic stress disorder and other health problems was sentenced Tuesday to seven years in prison.

Michael Jacobson was among five people indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2008. He was charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a drug user.

Jacobson had originally tried to use the insanity defense because of his mental health issues, but a judge told him it was unlikely he would succeed. He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced in June 2010 to the mandatory minimum term of 10 years in prison.

Jacobson agreed to a new plea deal after an appeal that accused his lawyer of doing a poor job.
