Load of logs spills when truck swerves to miss animal near Hawley

HAWLEY, Minn. – A trailer load of logs being pulled by a truck spilled into the ditch along Highway 10 when the driver swerved to avoid an animal and the vehicle rolled near here Monday, the Minnesota State Patrol says.

Daniel Volkmann, 63, of Fertile, was driving the 1991 International truck at about 11:55 p.m. when he swerved and the truck went into the left ditch, then back across the road and into the right ditch where it rolled, spilling the logs, the patrol said in a news release.

Volkmann was taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He did not want his condition released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
