Facts say ‘no’ to Measure 2I’ve been reading in the papers how good it will be if Measure 2 passes and the people of North Dakota won’t have to pay property tax. My question is, where is the money going to come from to run our schools, fire departments, cities, police, roads, townships and everything else the property tax took care of?
The people who have been in favor of Measure 2 say it would be a good thing if Measure 2 passes. But no one has said where the money is going to come from to cover the property tax. Some say the oil tax should cover the property tax. But when have you ever seen the government give you something for nothing?
Others say the Legislature will work out all the details on how these things will be funded and the money distributed. This means we will have to go to Bismarck with our hands out and beg for money. If we don’t get it, there will be insufficient funding for our rural fire departments, schools and other community resources.
One other thing: Where is the property tax from all of the nonresidents who own land and property in North Dakota going to come from? We, the people who live in North Dakota, will have to make up the difference somehow.
As a local city mayor, I neither have the time nor the inclination to drive to Bismarck to ask our legislators for the funds needed to operate our city. I urge all North Dakotans to consider the facts and vote “no” on Measure 2.
