Rick Berg should debate Duane SandWhy won’t Rep. Rick Berg, R-N.D., debate Duane Sand? Sand has challenged Berg to a U.S. Senate debate a number of times, but Berg won’t accept the challenge. This concerns me as a North Dakota voter.
Does Berg think he is a shoo-in because he has the North Dakota GOP endorsement and therefore doesn’t think he should take the chance of having a poor performance during a debate and lose at the primary? Does he think the conservative voters of North Dakota don’t need to know the differences between him and Sand, which a debate would provide much more clearly than political rhetoric and biases from TV ads, newspaper articles and candidate brochures?
I don’t know if I want a senator who is afraid of a local challenge to represent me in the U.S. Senate, where debating issues necessary to get our country back on track is critical. If Berg is afraid to debate Sand, how will he respond to his Democratic challenger leading up to the November election should he win the Republican Senate primary?
I will vote in November for whomever wins the Republican primary, but I want to see a good debate so everyone can make an informed decision when casting a vote at the June 12 primary.
