Defense Department confirms death of Minnesota soldierSTEWARTVILLE, Minn. — The U.S. Department of Defense has confirmed the death of a Minnesota soldier in Afghanistan.
The department said Wednesday 23-year-old Sgt. Nicholas Dickhut, of Rochester, died April 30 in Zharay, Afghanistan from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Dickhut is the first Minnesota service member to die in Afghanistan in 2012. The DOD says he was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
