Dumping ND property tax will require 400-page billBISMARCK (AP) — A lawyer for the North Dakota Legislature says it will take a mountain of paperwork to abolish property taxes in the state.
North Dakotans will decide June 12 whether to approve Measure 2. It is a constitutional amendment that would eliminate property taxes.
North Dakota Legislative Council attorney John Walstad is drafting a bill to implement the change if the voters approve it.
Walstad tells legislative leaders that getting rid of property taxes will require changing more than 500 sections of state law and repealing at least 200 sections. That's not counting the new laws that will be needed.
Walstad says the bill could run 400 to 500 pages. He says that's more than four times the length of the biggest bill he's ever seen in the Legislature.
