Letter: PSC stacks deck on coal projectThe proposed coal project near South Heart, N.D., is a jarring example of big-money influence and civic corruption at its worst. The massive coal complex is proposed just 13 miles from Theodore Roosevelt National Park and threatens to pollute the air, affect local water quality and destroy the natural beauty of the nearby landscape.
Despite local opposition, South Heart Coal has attempted to stack the deck by buying votes on North Dakota’s Public Service Commission. PSC Commissioners Kevin Cramer and Brian Kalk accepted more than $16,000 in campaign contributions from the company’s owner. It is time for them to step aside and recuse themselves from making any decisions on this project.
