Davies, Red River play to tie

FARGO – Fargo Davies had multiple chances, but in the end the Eagles were unable to cash in.

The Eagles played to a 0-0 tie with Grand Forks Red River on Thursday in Eastern Dakota Conference girls soccer at Fargo Davies High School.

Davies (7-0-1, 5-0-1 EDC) controlled the game start to finish dominating in possession and shots on goal, but Red River junior goalkeeper Nicole Ladeceur kept the Eagles offense from scoring.

“We play possession,” Davies head coach Nick Christianson said. “We want to keep the ball and keep the ball moving around to everybody. That’s how we create chances. We created some chances tonight and a couple of those could have easily been goals and this game could have been a different story.”

Davies outshot the Roughriders 20-6 and kept Ladeceur bury the entire match. Eagles forwards Paige McCullough and Emily Wendorff had multiple shots get stopped by Ladeceur. Wendorff’s had a shot early in the first half that was slowed by traffic and just avoided crossing the goal line by inches.

McCullough had a goal nullified by an offsides call nine minutes into the second half. Ten minutes later Wendorff had another shot miss the twine by inches instead hitting the crossbar.

“Davies had some great corner kicks, a breakaway and Nicole’s first save of the game really dictated her performance,” Red River head coach Jessica Krog said. “She played big and I’m not surprised by it.”

Ladeceur finished with 12 saves.

Red River (3-2-3, 3-1-2 EDC) was unable to get much going on offense, but its defense was able to outlast Davies attack.

“I thought it was a good battle especially in the midfield,” Krog said. “I thought our young team played well against Davies who hasn’t lost a game yet … We did a good job of shutting down their forwards and closing down the space.”

The tie keeps Davies close to Fargo Shanley in the EDC standings. Davies host Shanley at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

“That’s one of the games we circled on our calendar,” Christianson said. “We’ve been playing well up to this point. We have the weekend off and have to come ready to play on Tuesday.”

FIRST HALF: no scoring.

SECOND HALF: no scoring.

SAVES: FD, Orson 7. GRFF, Ladeceur 12.
