Reported scam involved bogus checks from N.D. Housing Finance Agency

BISMARCK – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is warning people to be aware of a scam that uses fake checks supposedly from a North Dakota government agency.

According to a news release from the attorney general’s office, the scam instructs recipients to deposit the fake government check and then wire a certain amount of money to a third party.

Recent scam reports say the fake checks appear to be from the North Dakota Housing Finance Agency.

Stenehjem said in the release that no legitimate government organization will ever ask a consumer to deposit a check and then wire money somewhere else.

Although there aren’t yet any known victims of the scam, Stenehjem said in the release that if consumers receive an unexpected check from a government agency, they should contact that agency directly before depositing the check.
