Couple sentenced for theft from ND tribe

FARGO — A Fort Totten couple has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution on federal charges of theft from a tribal organization.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says a jury found 38-year-old Justin Yankton guilty of the charge in January. Purdon says 29-year-old Brooke Black pleaded guilty to the charge one day after Yankton was found guilty.

U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Erickson sentenced Yankton each to two years of probation and ordered them to pay more than $6,000 in restitution and fines. Both also must perform community service work.

Yankton and Black, together with their children, shared a residence in Fort Totten on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation. Prosecutors say the couple illegally obtained financial assistance from federal programs.
