Weather Talk: Area could see 3 months of spring weather, a rarity

By coming so early, spring is giving us more of a full season this year.

Many years, March is just another month of winter weather. April then becomes the month of late winter and early spring, when the snow finally melts and the ground thaws. In these years, spring weather is often confined to a few short weeks starting in late April and ending sometime in early June.

This year, I would say spring began on March 12, the day a nice, steady rain washed away the last of the winter snow. Since then, weather has varied from cool to mild without ever being truly cold or hot. Buds, which came early, have been slow to grow to full summer weight or color. Grass greened early but has hardly needed mowing.

Prospects are high for a seasonal rarity in these parts – a full three months of spring weather.
