State Bank names recipients of Pay It Forward giftsA mom fighting breast cancer, a camp for children with diabetes and a fund for the funeral costs of the four North Dakota State University freshmen killed in a car crash in February are among this year’s recipients of State Bank & Trust’s Pay It Forward gifts.

The top award of $5,000 went to Vicky Westra, a mother of two undergoing treatment for stage 4 breast cancer. Her “book club friends” made a video on her behalf, hoping to help her family defray mounting medical bills.
- Camp Sioux, the American Diabetes Association’s camp in Park River, N.D., for children with diabetes.
- A fundraising effort for the families of four NDSU students killed in a car crash on Interstate 94 in February.
- Samantha Meyer, a
25-year-old photographer grappling with the loss of two babies and a rare genetic disorder.
- The Fargo North High School Key Club, which is volunteering in a meal-packaging effort to fight world hunger.
- Cathy Holowell, a mother of two who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. The video was made by her children, and the money will go toward a family vacation to Alaska, where Cathy and her husband met and where one of their children was born.
The bank also made five $1,000 awards to:
The gifts are part of the bank’s broader Pay It Forward initiative. Every year since 2007, the bank has given $1,000 to each full-time employee and $500 to every part-time employee to give back to causes in the community.
