Fargo native to show rough cut of documentary

FARGO – At North Dakota State University on Friday, Jennifer Baumgardner, an author, activist, and filmmaker, will show part of a documentary she is working on about rape.

The event will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Beckwith Recital Hall.

Baumgardner, a Fargo native, will show a 45-minute rough cut of her documentary, called “It Was Rape.”

She will answer questions after the screening and will be joined by NDSU lecturer Dena Wyum, who is featured in the film.

“Advocating for sexual assault victims has been an important component in healing from my own rape,” Wyum said in a news release. “While it was a difficult decision to share my story in such an intimate way, my ultimate hope is that the film’s collection of stories honors the experiences of victims and allows non-victims a window into the trauma and effects of sexual violence.”

Baumgardner started the project in 2008 following a project she did in 2004 called “I Had an Abortion,” which documented women’s stories about abortion.

The Office of Student Life Sexual Assault Prevention Programs is sponsoring the event.
