Dickson officials: Restaurant grease clogging sewers

DICKINSON, N.D. — City officials in Dickinson say sewers are being clogged by grease dumped down drains by restaurants.

City Engineer Shawn Soehren says a recent large grease blockage in a sewer main caused some backups.

The Dickinson Press reports that city accounting manager told the City Commission that Dickinson paid two claims for $7,500 from the backup. Soehren says four other claims have been submitted.

The city's wastewater backup fund has less than $66,000 and can pay up to $7,500 for each claim, according to the city financial report.

The engineering department has an idea where the grease is coming from, but Soehren would not specify which restaurants are responsible.

Restaurants are supposed to dispose of grease by giving it to a company that collects it.
