Babbitt man accused of stabbing toddler to have evaluationDULUTH, Minn. (AP) — A mental health exam has been ordered for a man accused of stabbing a toddler in St. Louis County.
Derek Nathan Klingfus appeared in court Monday. His public defender, Bruce Williams, requested the evaluation.
The Babbitt man is charged with four counts of assault in the Jan. 24 incident. Police says Klingfus was acting strangely and erratically before he allegedly stabbed the little girl.
A police officer responding to the scene, shot Klingfus after he displayed a knife, and later, allegedly held it to the girl's throat.
WDIO-TV says the St. Louis County Attorney's Office later ruled the officer's use of force was justified.
