Despite jail staff recognizing him, "John Doe" still mum about his nameFARGO – The man arrested here last week for an alleged car break-in who refused to give his name to police and was charged as “John Doe” has finally been identified – sort of.
Cass County Assistant State’s Attorney Tristan Van de Streek said the man was identified over the weekend after a staffer at the Cass County Jail recognized him to be 51-year-old Lawrence Elton Guy.
“We’re proceeding under the basis that we think we know who he is,” Van de Streek said.
When confronted with that information, though, the man neither confirmed nor denied that he is who jail staff thinks he is, the prosecutor said.
While it’s not unusual for an inmate to refuse to give their name but then be recognized by someone at the jail, Van de Streek said, it is a bit rarer that that person will still deny it.
“Most people will, when confronted with knowledge of who they are, admit it,” he said.
Court records show no previous criminal convictions for Guy in North Dakota or Minnesota. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 17.
