No prom for Fargo South senior and date, but fun night planned anyway

FARGO – It doesn’t look like Fargo South student Anjali Karna will get her wish.

Karna’s father, Kartheek Karna, said Friday night that despite continuing conversations with school officials, the 17-year-old won’t be allowed to attend tonight’s prom because she hasn’t made up enough detentions.

He said school officials were sympathetic about the situation, but “there was no exception made. She will not be able to go to prom.”

Anjali Karna’s prom date was to have been Keith Coates, the son of Fargo School Board member Linda Boyd Coates. It turns out he’s in the same boat as Karna.

Boyd Coates said Friday her son found out earlier in the week he wouldn’t be able to attend prom because he also hasn’t made up enough detentions.

Boyd Coates said the students aren’t too dejected. Instead, they’ve made alternative plans.

“They’re going to get dressed up, go out to eat, go to a movie, and they’ll meet up with their friends afterwards,” Boyd Coates said.

And as a mother, Boyd Coates just hopes they have a good time, even if that’s not at prom.

“I think they came up with a fun alternative,” she said. “I think they’re going to have a good time.”
