FARGO – For all of the merchandise sold at the Blue Man Group’s show at the Gate City Bank Theatre in the Fargodome on Tuesday night, it was surprising not to see any lighters.

The show was part of the touring Broadway season, but a Blue Man performance is as much a rock concert – or even rave – as it is a night at the theater.

The trio of identical azure-faced performers pounded out rhythms, danced and acted in subdued style throughout the 90-minute performance without saying a single word. But there was very little silence as the audience roared with approval to circus-like tricks and comedy bits.

It’s a bit odd when you realize the crowd is more vocal than the act, but really, the crowd is the fourth member at a Blue Man show. A number of times the trio pulled a fan from the audience on stage to take part, like the woman invited to eat a Twinkie dinner with the gentlemen, to hilariously gross effect. Or the young man used in a body-painting bit.

The only mic’d voices were pre-recorded and played over the loud speaker system, offering instructions, like how to act at a rock concert, all evoking audience response.

The audience was on its feet for the last part of the set when the Blue dudes requested the crowd shake their butts. Fans were rewarded with about 10 ginormous inflated, lighted balls, streams of toilet paper and confetti.

It was as close as many of the middle-aged in the crowd will (or will want to) get to a rave.

Not everyone appreciated the audience feedback. A woman in front of me chided a man who yelled “Free Bird,” by saying, “Someone should put a sock in his mouth.” Minutes later, the crowd erupted when the Blue Men and their band cranked out the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic.

The second and final show starts at 7:30 tonight.
