970WDAY blog to feature vintage clips to celebrate 90th birthday

How do you celebrate a 90th birthday? If you’re Betty White you hold a big Hollywood shindig. But since we’re not Betty White and we don’t know any Hollywood big shots. We’ll just celebrate the 90th birthday of Fargo’s oldest radio station by pulling out all the stops.

On May 22, 1922, Earl Reineke started WDAY-AM in a tower of what is now the Cass County Courthouse. This year as we mark our 90th anniversary, we’ll give our listeners the chance to win either $90 or $900 dollars in gas from Stop n’ Go. Click here for details.

In addition to that, we’ll offer readers of this blog something extra special – a glimpse back in time. Production manager Steve Tschida has been busy digging through the archives of WDAY to share with us some great old memories from days gone by. Every week on this blog, we’ll share with you audio and video clips from WDAY-AM over the past 90 years. Some of these clips haven’t been heard or seen in years.

Once again you’ll hear from personalities such as Ken Kennedy, Jack Dunn and the Texas Ranger, musicians such as Pat Kelly, Frank Scott and Hildegard the organist. Perhaps the most fun is listening to those old shows like Teletest Time and the Co-op Shoppers. And you may or may not know the great Peggy Lee (formerly Norma Deloris Egstrom from Jamestown) got her start right here on 970WDAY.

You can hear all of it on the 970 WDAY blog starting this week and running through June. We’d also love to hear from you. Share your stories of growing up with WDAY-AM. Who were your favorite personalities, what shows did you like best? What would you like to hear? They’ll be some other surprises along the way too.

It’s going to be fun! Stay tuned!
