FARGO – Slide on your cowboy boots and settle into your saddle.
Or just wear your weekend sneakers and find a spot to sit.
You don’t need to have a big belt buckle and a cowboy hat to appreciate the action at the annual PRCA Championship Rodeo at the Fargodome. You just need a good seat and to keep your eyes on the activity.
The rodeo starts at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday and features some big name riders. And once the buzzer sounds and it’s time to ride, there’s no telling what will happen.
Just ask Jeff Willert. The world champion saddle bronc rider from Belvidere, S.D., has a bio that reads like a medical chart to make Evel Knievel grimace. “In 2001, he got hung up on a horse and broke his ankle, and in 2002 he broke his toes after a horse ran him up against a gate. Then in 2003, he was kicked in the head by a horse after being bucked off at Reno (Nev.) Rodeo and suffered nerve damage that cost him the sight in his left eye.”
This isn’t a leisurely Sunday ride, after all.
Willert rides with other championship hopefuls Jess Bail and Chuck Schmidt.
It’s not just the horsemen who are the star athletes. Rodeo Clown Gizmo McCracken brings his life-saving barrel act to the Fargodome as well. McCracken was nominated as the Coors “Man in the Can” from 2007 to ’09.
Check out all the action, both on the ground and on horseback. Just be prepared for a wild ride.
