Mercury found by old West Fargo stockyards

WEST FARGO – Kids exploring near the old stockyards here on Monday evening discovered a small amount of mercury that police are confident is not a threat to the environment.

Assistant Police Chief Mike Reitan said between 2 and 3 tablespoons of mercury was found in a concrete tank that was used to treat water in the stockyards.

Fargo Cass Public Health viewed the mercury and considered it contained and not a threat to the river, Reitan said.

West Fargo Public Works is currently in the process of cleaning up the materials from the site.
