Shirvani offered job of ND university chancellor

BISMARCK, N.D. — A California university president will be offered the job of chancellor of North Dakota's university system.

North Dakota's Board of Higher Education voted Tuesday to offer the job to Hamid Shirvani.

Shirvani and Nebraska education administrator Marshall Hill were the finalists for the job.

The board voted 5-3 to offer the position to Shirvani. His supporters say he would be a strong leader who would push for change in the state's university system. Opponents said they feared he would be a polarizing figure.

The board interviewed four finalists at Bismarck State College on Tuesday. If Shirvani takes the job, he will replace William Goetz. Goetz is retiring in August.
